I began making an early version of the Memory Box for friends and family as gifts. Every year, on someone’s birthday or a holiday, I was trying to figure out what to get them that was meaningful and expressed what our relationship meant to me. I began developing a box that could house some fun, themed spinners and photos, as well as a greeting card. Each time I made a box, it began to evolve and I was constantly trying to find new ways to improve it; how it was assembled, efficiencies in how it was made, how to produce it quicker and how I could sell it as a gift. The most current variant that I sell in my online shop is a magnetic closure box made out of specialty paper. The first panel holds a greeting card, the second panel has an accordion for the purchaser to place 5 photos, and the third panel has two heartfelt message cards which prompt you to write your favorite memories of the receiver; “My favorite memory of us is…” and “I never thanked you for…” The project started out as a customized product, but evolved into a templated gift that someone could buy pre-made and customize it themselves, giving them more flexibility to make it their own and also encourage purchases at farmers markets.
